As we celebrate the launch of Amber 7, we sat down with Czech & Speake founder Frank Sawkins to uncover the inspirations behind our newest fragrance.
What was your starting point for Amber 7?
Amber is an ingredient that has been used in perfumery for centuries, renowned for its restorative properties and complex, addictive scent.
When it came to creating our first Amber fragrance, I chose to reinterpret a centuries-old scent, prized in Ancient Arabian perfumery, with a modern twist. By adding fresh citrus notes to the opening with energetic mid notes of eucalyptus and ginger, I have created an elegant and captivating scent that transports you to lands both mysterious and bold.
Where does the Amber 7 name come from?
Amber 7 is years in the making, and the 7 signifies this as the seventh – and final – formulation, which we knew was the one.
What do you find so inspiring about the fragrance?
With its signature warm, powdery character, Amber is what I call a fantasy fragrance – it’s not a single note but rather an accord made up of a complex collection of ingredients, including vanilla, cistus and benzoin.
I’m inspired by the subversive power of this scent: by turning expectations of an Amber fragrance on their head with a fresh opening, we have created an exciting, modern scent which is unlike anything that has come before.
Like each Czech & Speake fragrance, the packaging and bottle design are totally unique. What were your inspirations for this?
We are proud of Amber 7’s distinctive design. I wanted to create something new and bold, which matches the unique energy and vibrancy of our first ever Amber accord.
The box and bottle design actually stem from the recurring motif of rain in Ridley Scott’s film, which brings raw energy, moody emotion and drives his narratives forward. Amber 7’s black rain-streaked box matches this energy – which, in turn, matches the vibrant notes of lime, bergamot, eucalyptus and zesty ginger.
And finally, Amber 7 has launched exclusively in a 100ml bottle. Looking forward, what else can we expect?
Later this year, we will introduce the travel-sized 50ml bottle. This will be followed by the Amber 7 Home Fragrance collection. With its rich warming accord, Amber 7 is the perfect accord to scent your home, through the winter months and beyond.
