We love an excuse to visit Paris, and major lifestyle trade show and authority for home decor, Maison & Objet, is certainly a reason to do so. Having just visited the leading event with a few nights stay in the beautiful city, we were captivated by the standard of contemporary design that graces some of the top hotels across Paris. For your next stay, discover our three favourite hotels conceived by design world greats.
Nolinski, Jean Louis Deniot
Jean Louis Deniot is recognised on a global scale for his ability to create eclectic interiors that maintain a distinct sense of balance through cohesive colour palettes and a refined selection of objects, furniture and fittings. His characterful design style works perfectly for the Nolinski hotel, positioned between the Palais Royal gardens and the Comédie Française; Deniot realised the importance of finding a ‘logic’ between the hotel and its surroundings. His approach was to design the rooms in the style of traditional Parisian apartments but modernised with flashes of bright colour, contemporary furniture and bold shapes. A design detail that highlights this concept well is his striking interpretation of the panelling. This classical wall decor found across the hotel suites has been re-defined with geometric flare.
Brach, Philipp Starck
World regarded French designer, Philipp Starck, has been responsible for the design of numerous luxury hotels worldwide. His motivation for each of these projects is to transform a place of service and impersonal transience to an experience that evokes emotion and warmth. Hotel Brach, in the capital of his home country, in particular is quite special. The grand space was previously a postal sorting office built in the 1970’s, which Starke reimagined into a modernist dream, with references to Dada, Bauhuas and surrealism. The hotels distinctive feature is the bold use of raw material such as glass, leather, marble and dark, glossy wood that clads each of the bedrooms. These contrasting materials along with carefully considered warm lighting find the perfect harmony between drama and comfort.
Hotel Des Grands Boulevards, Dorothée Meilichzon
Hotel Des Grands Boulevards was designed by a previous award winner at Maison & Object, receiving the title of M&O Paris Designer of the Year 2015. Designer Dorothée Meilichzon set up her multipurpose agency ‘CHZON’ with the intention to design spaces with personality, working closing with craftsmen, sourcing gems from flea markets while keeping her finger on the pulse of what’s current in design. Hotel Des Grands Boulevards is a stunning example of her work. The building was erected just before the French Revolution, and Meilichzon used this period as her inspiration, combining the “Splendour” of the time with the contrasting peasantry. Grand furnishings such as canopy beds are made modest with muted linens.
